What Was Thanksgiving

“What Was Thanksgiving”, a short informational chapter book, by Joan Holub, describes how the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians unite to make our national holiday Thanksgiving. I learned that most of the pictures and paintings of the first Thanksgiving are false. They have the pilgrims in shiny black suits and there was barely any Wampanoag and if there were they were off to the side. The Pilgrims would never be in a black suit because they simply couldn’t make that color of dye for clothes. Also, I learned that the Mayflower, filled with pilgrims, came over from Europe in search of their own way to pray. They were searching for a way to worship in their own way, not the king's.

I loved this book. It taught me all about the very first Thanksgiving. The pictures put a vision in my brain even though they were only drawings. The details were important and not just interesting. But now and then there were some interesting facts which I liked. I learned a lot about one of my favorite holidays. Clearly, I enjoyed it and learned a lot, I think you will too.
