A Night Divided Summary

A Night Divided, a long chapter book, describes a split-up family with one half on the west side and the other on the east side of the Berlin Wall fighting against the German communists. Gerta is a

twelve-year-old girl from Belin. Greta's family was separated when she was just eight. All Gerta wanted was for her family to be reunited in West Berlin. However, they had to get to the other side of the wall, and that was no easy task. German Stasi, Grenzer, dogs, two walls, and three hundred yards of death strip all stood in their way. Their dad tried to send them a message on how to get to them on the other side. Then, Gerta figured out the message and started to dig. Finally, Gerta and her family safely made it over to the other side.

    After reading this book, I discovered some interesting characters. Fritz, one of the main characters, has some interesting character traits. First, Fritz is a hard worker. In the book, it says that after a long day of school, he would lay bricks at his job. The text said sometimes he wouldn’t come home until midnight. Next, Fritz is brave. The text also describes him helping Gerta make the tunnel which is very risky. It also stated that he was questioned by the government and stayed very brave during it. Finally, Fritz is a leader. He is the man of the house while his younger brother and dad are not with them. Text read he leads Gerta and Mama to safety while the soldiers are shooting at them as well as telling Gerta how to be a good person. As you can see Fritz is an intriguing character.
