The Popsicle Stick Bridge
“The Popsicle Stick Bridge,” by Marlane Sebasta Serea, a short story, tells about how a girl comes to a problem where all the girl partners are taken. Cassandra is the main character. Her best friend moved away and she didn’t have a girl partner for their class’s project, called the popsicle bridge building. The goal is to have the most weights on their bridge. All she wanted to do was win. However, she didn’t like her partner. She thought she would lose because he was a bad partner. So she didn’t work as hard as she usually does because she was upset. Then at recess, Robert, her partner, went to save worms with Cassandra. In the end, their bridge ended up winning and breaking the class record for most weights on one bridge.
Reading this story was interesting. However, we had some questions and thoughts. I loved the characters. For example, Cassandra was a doubtful character, which is why Robert was my favorite character. He’s funny with all his konk konk jokes and I liked how he accepted Cassandra as his partner. Like I said I had some questions. One of my questions was why Robert went to pick up worms with Cassandra when he could be playing with his friends. I learned a great lesson after reading this story. The lesson I learned was you have to be accepting of everybody because you never really know what they are really like to the fullest. Just like at the end of the book Cassandra became friends with Robert. This story was very relatable to my sister and Tyler’s brothers and their friends. We understood it way more because of that reason. Therefore we really liked it.
