Refugee
Refugee, by Alan Gratz, a historical fiction book, describes three terrifying stories of the cruelest times in history. Joseph, Isabella, and Mahmoud, about 12 or thirteen tears old. Joseph is a jew living in Germany during the early 1930s during the rule of Hitler. He had to constantly keep moving to survive. So he took a cruise ship called the SS Saint Luise to Cuba to escape death but Cuba does not them in; the Cubans kept saying Manana, tomorrow. Isabella is a young girl in Cuba who every day has to suffer from hunger, thirst, and the heat of the sun. She also has one of the worst leaders in history, Fidel Castro, and she can’t take it anymore, so she, her family, and her friend and his family try to sail to Miami in what they call their savior but what you and I would call a homemade, makeshift, piece of floating trash. Mahmoud’s story wasn’t much better. Unless you think having to walk through several countries just to get shot and said they weren't wanted there while he never lost the thought of never going back to his county, what he calls home, all because the country is bombing each other in a civil war.
This was a ten out of ten!!! I loved all the details. Every chapter I want the last one to keep going but also the new one to start. They were great stories but they made me want to cry after every page a turned. If you like historical fiction books I really recommend this book and all of Alan Gratz’s other books. Oh, if you would excuse me I need to get to my next Alan Gratz book.
